Prof David Chapman, Dr A Royal  Applications accepted all year round  Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Geophysical surveys are becoming increasingly important in understanding the performance, and change in performance, of geotechnical assets (embankments, earth dams, etc.) over time. However, the relationship between changes in geophysical properties (such as bulk electrical conductivity) and associated changes in geotechnical properties (density, strength, etc.) is still poorly understood. The proposed study would utilise an experimental investigation to improve this understanding by determining relationships between geophysical and geotechnical properties for various soils in various conditions.

Informal enquires can be sent to Dr Alexander Royal ([Email Address Removed]) or Professor David Chapman ([Email Address Removed]) and in the first instance should contain a covering letter and a CV.

Funding Notes

For excellent applicants (very good first degree), there is the potential for funding for Home / EU students that will cover fees at the current Home / EU student rate and a stipend. Overseas students are welcome to apply but should note that they will be required to be either completely self-funding, or to make up the difference between Home and Overseas fees.
