Investigation of Energy Transfer in Novel Out-of-Autoclave Manufacture of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites

Project Description

Traditional autoclave curing technology for fabricating high performance composites is limited by high capital investment and operational costs with long throughput time and excessive energy consumption. This project aims to improve out-of-autoclave composites manufacture by optimising energy transfer in the process. The key objectives include understand and improve composite resin curing behaviour during out-of-autoclave composites manufacture, improve energy efficiency, and optimise composite curing process. The research methodology will involve a simulation-experiment combined approach encompassing around critical tasks. These tasks will involve understand and model composite curing behaviour by investigating cure kinetics during manufacture processes. The student will perform comprehensive thermal analysis utilised to characterise cure kinetic parameters followed by heat transfer analysis in carbon fibre composites. In addition, different methods will be examined to improve moulding process efficiency. These involve modification to both tooling and resin system. The effect of these methods will be evaluated by examining energy consumption, cycle time, part property.

The student will have an opportunity to work closely with both academic and industrial experts in composites manufacture and expose to cutting-edge development in out-of-autoclave composite manufacturing during the project. The student will join Advanced Composites Group ( equipped with world-class facilities for composites manufacturing and characterisation. The student will also join UK top 10 department in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering ( at University of Strathclyde situated at the heart of vibrant city, Glasgow in Scotland.

This 4-year PhD project is sponsored by Scottish Research Partnership in Engineering and Spirit Aerosystems through Industry Doctorate Programme in Advanced Manufacturing.

Funding Notes

Students applying should normally have (or expect to achieve) a first class undergraduate degree or master degree with distinction in a relevant mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and materials engineering subject, and be highly motivated to undertake cutting-edge research in this field. Candidates with experience in composite materials and manufacture are strongly encouraged to apply.

The award will cover tuition fees for the 4 year period of study, and provide a monthly stipend (total of £15009 for academic year 2019/20, and subject to increase)
