Investigation of mechanisms of interaction/performance of Green Corrosion inhibitors for High temperature and pressure H2S/CO2 Corrosion Environment


Project Description

The cost of corrosion is currently over $2 Trillion or 3% of the GDP of all G20 economies. Corrosion consistently presents a significant threat to the UK and world energy production infrastructure and manifests in various forms. Localised corrosion is the most prominent and it usually occurs with the formation of corrosion products in arduous energy production systems.

This project present an exciting opportunity to work in the Institute of Functional Surfaces, University of Leeds on fundamental research funded by EPSRC and in collaboration with Baker Hughes; one of the largest global manufacturers of oilfield production chemicals for corrosion mitigation. It focuses on optimising green CIs for energy production systems such as geothermal and oil and gas.

This project is aimed at understanding the mechanisms by which the active component in green corrosion inhibitors (CIs) interacts with corrosion interfaces characterised by a complex mixture of corrosion deposits formed under H2S-containing conditions at high temperature and pressure (HT/HP).

Interested candidates will also have an opportunity into a multidisciplinary science/engineering area of research that includes materials for energy application, electrochemical sciences, surface engineering and surface science etc.

Funding Notes

UK/EU - Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council Industrial CASE Studentships paying Home/EU of £4,600 for Session 2020/21, together with a maintenance grant of £15,285 for Session 2020/21 paid at standard Research Council rates for 4 years. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis.  UK applicants will be eligible for a full award paying tuition fees and maintenance. European Union applicants will be eligible for an award paying tuition fees only, except in exceptional circumstances, or where residency has been established for more than 3 years prior to the start of the course.
