Project Description

The Newcastle group has previously shown that during ageing, neurons, which are post-mitotic cells, can acquire a senescent-like phenotype. This is a new and exciting area of research which offers new and potentially surprising insights into the mechanisms driving neuronal senescence and their contribution to the cognitive decline observed during ageing. This is an area of obvious major relevance which is so far largely unexplored, such that work in this project might become really important for our future understanding of brain ageing. This project offers training in brain ageing and mechanisms of cellular senescence at both Newcastle and Durham University. The student will be part of a multidisciplinary environment and have access to state-of-the art techniques and facilities in a new area of research.

Funding Notes

This is a 4 year BBSRC studentship under the Newcastle-Liverpool-Durham DTP. The successful applicant will receive research costs, tuition fees and stipend (£14,057 for 2015-16). The PhD will start in September 2016. Applicants should have, or be expecting to receive, a 2.1 Hons degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. EU candidates must have been resident in the UK for 3 years in order to receive full support. There are 2 stages to the application process.
