About the Project

Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals for a funded full time PhD studentship with skills, knowledge and/or experience in internal combustion engines. The successful applicant will join the Centre for Advanced Powertrain and Fuels. (https://www.brunel.ac.uk/research/Institutes/Institute-of-Energy-Futures/Advanced-Powertrains-and-Fuels-Theme)
This PhD project is focused on the investigation of the new ignition methods and fuels for low and zero-carbon high efficiency engines. New ignition devices and new fuels will be implemented and researched in the single cylinder engines and a constant volume chamber and the ignition and combustion of different fuels will be studied by means of heat release analysis and advanced optical and laser measurement techniques.
Eligibility
Applicants will have received a first degree at 2:1 (65%) or above in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering, or other related engineering and physics subjects. Previous experience and knowledge in one of more of the following topics will be desirable: optical and laser measurement techniques, low temperature plasma discharge, combustion chemistry, engine testing.

Funding Notes

The studentship will be for a period of 3 years and the successful applicant from the UK/EU will receive an annual stipend of £18K (tax free) plus payment of their full time Home/EU tuition fees. For the successful overseas applicant from countries outside UK/EU, the studentship will cover the Overseas Student Fees and an annual stipend of £6K for 3 years.
