About the Project

PhD in Biomedical Engineering: Understanding heart disease in women

Investigate Coronary Artery Disease In Women Using

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling

Introduction

Are you a

driven and ambitious candidate passionate about biomedical engineering? We have

an exceptional PhD opportunity that merges your academic aspirations with

groundbreaking research in cardiovascular health. Join us as we delve into why

coronary artery disease – the single largest killer worldwide - is so misunderstood

in women, utilizing computational fluid dynamics modelling to gain deeper

insights and contribute to life-saving advancements.

Understanding heart disease in women:

Unmasking the Silent Threat

Heart disease,

specifically plaque narrowing of the coronary artery (the arteries around the

heart), is a classical characteristic before a heart attack. However, in women,

this disease is often non-obstructive and thus poorly understood. Investigating

sex-specific differences in the underlying fluid mechanic processes can reveal a

wealth of new information about the disease mechanisms. Your research will aim

to unravel the underlying mechanisms of coronary artery disease in women,

providing crucial insights for improved diagnostic techniques and treatment

strategies.

Cutting-Edge Research: Computational

Fluid Dynamics Modelling

As a

successful candidate, you will embark on an exhilarating research journey,

leveraging the power of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling. By

simulating and analysing blood flow patterns within the coronary arteries, your

work will shed light on the haemodynamic factors contributing to plaque

development, progression and rupture in males and females. This

interdisciplinary approach, blending biomedical engineering, fluid dynamics,

and cardiovascular health, will pave the way for innovative solutions in

preventing and managing the disease.

Collaborative Endeavors: A

Multidisciplinary Team

Joining our

esteemed research team, you will collaborate closely with biomedical

engineering, cardiology, and computational modelling experts. This

multidisciplinary environment will foster a vibrant exchange of ideas,

nurturing a culture of innovation and scientific excellence. By working alongside

accomplished professionals, you will expand your knowledge and develop

invaluable skills in research methodology, data analysis, and scientific

communication.

Impactful Contributions: Saving Lives

Through Research

Through your

dedicated efforts, you will make tangible contributions to cardiovascular

health. Your research can revolutionise diagnostic methods and therapeutic

interventions by deciphering the complex interactions between blood flow

dynamics, arterial structure, and disease vulnerability. Your work will

directly impact the lives of individuals at risk of heart attacks, providing

hope and enhancing their chances of survival and recovery.

Collaboration Across Disciplines:

Unlocking New Possibilities

At UNSW, we

believe in the power of collaboration. As the successful candidate, you can

work closely with a multi-disciplinary team comprising experts in medicine,

computer sciences, and mechanical engineering. This diverse collaboration will

broaden your knowledge and foster a unique environment where innovative ideas

thrive.
