Provisional field of study:
Irene Mabel Marsh: her impact on the development of women’s education through innovations in the teaching of dance and sport at I.M. Marsh College 1900-1992

Project detail
I M Marsh College was one of seven specialist English women’s physical education colleges in England. Established in 1900, Irene Mabel Marsh was part of a ground-breaking group of women pioneers in physical education, sport, dance and women’s rights. Dance has been a key component in the education of women at the college, as a separate, but important element in physical education. A key part of the PhD will be to work in conjunction with the LJMU archives, to make contact though the Association of Past Students with women who studied at the College and to trace past graduates and lecturers through key networks in order to gather narratives of those who attended or taught. This PhD will contribute to a wider project on the College’s history.
