Prof Peter McMeekin, Prof John Wildman  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

This studentship is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the UK's largest funder of economic, social, behavioural and human data science. It will utilise ADR UK’s flagship datasets to investigate issues around employment in the domiciliary care sector and whether evidence of the Baumol Effect can be found within the domiciliary care sector. In particular, the studentship will focus on the factors associated with moves into and out of the sector over time. The key issues the student will investigate are whether wage changes in other sectors competing for labour driving movements into and out of the domiciliary care sector at national and regional levels and the extent to which wages in other sectors are associated with moves out of or into employment in the domiciliary care sector.

The PhD can be undertaken as 1+3 PhD, when the first year is spent completing a relevant Master's degree. The Master's degree subject will be dependent on individual student circumstances."

The primary longitudinal data source that will be used in this analysis will be the Wage and Employment Dynamics (WED),

https://www.wagedynamics.com/wed-project-home/about/, which links data on

employee earnings to employer data, with additional demographic data being

added from the 2011 Census.

The student will be embedded in the larger North East and North Cumbria

Applied Research Collaboration (ARC NENC). The ARC NENC is part of the NIHR,

providing infrastructure for applied research https://arc-nenc.nihr.ac.uk/).

The student will benefit from ARCs collective expertise. They will be encouraged to attend relevant events across the region as well as within the regional and national Doctoral Training Programmes.
