We are pleased to announce that, exceptionally, we are accepting applications for PhD for July start and that we are offering scholarships with £3,000 bursaries for full-time study to excellent applicants. These scholarships are particularly targeted within Applied Health Sciences, Public Health, Nursing and Criminology, though we may consider applications for other areas within the School of Human and Health Sciences, depending on supervisory capacity. Proposals are welcome for innovative research which aligns with the current research of our staff working particularly within our Centre for Applied Research in Health; Applied Criminology and Policing Centre; Secure Societies Institute; Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention. We very much welcome a range of research proposals, but please contact individual staff via the above links or via our Research Portal to discuss how your ideas fit with staff research interests and check individual staff availability for supervision.

All postgraduate researchers within our School benefit from skilled supervision by experienced and enthusiastic researchers, as well as a comprehensive programme of training in research methods, researcher development and preparation for teaching.
Eligibility criteria & conditions
- Achievement that equates to first-class honours at undergraduate level or a distinction at master’s level in a relevant discipline. We will consider exceptional applicants without a master’s.
- If your first language is not English, you will need to meet minimum requirements equivalent to IELTS of 7.0 overall, no element lower than 6.5.
- A condition of the scholarship is that you will contribute an average of six hours per week to assisting with undergraduate teaching, preparation and marking and/or supporting staff research and broader School activities, without additional payment.
Funding amount
- Bursary of £3000 per year for three years
- Waiver of equivalent of home fees (International students will be charged the difference between home and international fees)
- Modest costs for field work and conference attendance
