Project Description :
The successful student will work on adapting the Connect[1] Health and Wellbeing Programme to the Health and Well-being Area of Learning and Experience, Welsh curriculum. The Connect Curriculum for Health and Wellbeing is an evidence-informed curriculum derived from the latest psychological theory on the elements of wellbeing and psychological flexibility and resilience. It is the first wellbeing curriculum to be fully informed by the psychological research framework of an evidence based therapy called ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).
Programme of research:
This research project seeks to examine how we can map and adapt ‘Connect’, a Health and Wellbeing (H&W) Programme for primary school children, to the new Programme for Wales (2022)—specifically to the H&W Area of Learning and Experience (AoLE).
The proposed project aims to co-design, with lead-schools in the H&W ALoE in the North East of Wales, an adapted version of the Connect programme. H&W of all children in Wales being a current national priority for Welsh Government. This has grown in contextual importance given the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our children; as such it is essential that teachers have access to a relevant and usable evidence-informed approach to helping children develop resilience and strong wellbeing behaviours.
Our research questions are:
1. How are programmes currently being used in English medium primary schools in Wales to embed H&W into the curriculum?
2. What is the evidence base for these programmes?
3. Using a co-constructed adaptation process with lead H&W practitioners (e.g., key lead H&W practitioners), to what extent can the Connect programme be adapted to the H&W AoLE?
Studentship:
The studentship will cover the fees for a full-time Research Masters programme and pay a stipend of circa £11,700 p.a. There is also around £3k project support costs available for consumables, travel, minor equipment, training (including the KESS 2 East Grad School) and conference attendance.
The position is available from February 2022.
Eligibility of Student:
To be eligible to hold a KESS studentship, you must:
· have a home address in East Wales (details below)* at the time of registration.
· have the right to take up paid work in the Convergence area* on completion of the scholarship.
· must have the right to work in the region on qualification
· satisfy Bangor University’s admissions criteria: see below, qualifications and experience and application process
* The Convergence area covers East Wales: Flintshire/Wrexham/Powys/Monmouthshire/Newport/Cardiff/The Vale of Glamorgan
Essential
· Have a degree (2i or higher) in either psychology, education, health, or other relevant discipline,
· Possess an interest in health and wellbeing of children and its use within health and/or social care settings,
· Possess a reasonable understanding of qualitative & quantitative research methods,
· Be willing to work in educational settings
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to prepare and present reports. Excellent organisational skills.
· Be highly self-motivated and have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
· Experience of working to deadlines.
Desirable
· The ability to communicate in Welsh.
