About the Project

School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University, 4 Askew St, Menai Bridge, LL59 5EG.

Project ID: BUK2E051 - Research Masters’

Annual Stipend: £11,702

Application Deadline: 15/06/2021

Interviews week commencing: 12/07/2021

Monitoring material transport in our oceans is a major challenge. Prediction of likely sources of pollution allows risk mitigation practices that improves ecosystem health. The transport of pollution, microplastics, marine litter and organisms (e.g. larvae) have a wide range of applications in industry (e.g. aquaculture, tourism), for government policy (e.g. offshore and onshore management), and for planning (e.g. marine protected area, spread of invasive species). However, the interaction of the ocean with material transported may be an important step towards deterministic prediction, such as the physical processes necessary to resolve in particle transport (waves, 3D tidal currents, bioaccumulation and particle degradation). This project therefore brings together a suite of novel observation methods and state of the art ocean model outputs, to determine key variables needed in ocean transport prediction.

The project aims are to:

1.      Develop a Lagrangian particle tracking model (PTM in Matlab, R or Python), that can be applied to an existing hydrodynamic model to predict the transport of particles over the temporal and spatial scale of oceanographic processes (i.e. mechanical breakdown on marine plastic litter, plastic degradation, bio-accumulation due to wind, waves, tides and solar radiation).

2.      Collect oceanographic data using drifters and observation records to validate and evaluate the effectiveness of the PTM.

We are seeking a highly motivated graduate for this opportunity to undertake a Research Masters in collaboration between Bangor University and CGG geosciences (https://www.cgg.com/en). The Research Masters project is expected to start as soon as possible after the interview and will take one year to complete. The successful candidate will be based in the School of Ocean Sciences (SOS) and will be co-supervised by academic supervisors Dr Jonathan Demmer, Dr Matt Lewis and Prof Simon Neill as well as industrial supervisor Dr David Gold. We expect the student to work towards publication of their Research Masters in a peer-reviewed journal article.

CGG is a global geoscience technology leader committed to pursuing excellence in innovation and aims to be a driving force in the technological advancement of the renewable, environmental and engineering sectors. CGG’s dedicated Environmental Geoscience Group manages environmental monitoring projects through the application of:

  • Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence knowledge
  • Advanced digitalisation, databasing and data management
  • High-end computing power and computer modelling

The applicant should: (1) hold a degree in physical oceanography, computer science, mathematics, civil engineering, or a related scientific discipline; and (2) have demonstrably excellent research skills and programming experience in languages such as R, Matlab and Python. The successful candidate will gain data analysis and computer programming skills, but also valuable insight working with CGG.
