About the Project

Project ID: BUK2E063

Annual Stipend: £11,702 pa stipend, plus budget to support delivery of the project

Application deadline: July 30th, 2021

Applications are invited for a one-year, full time KESS 2 East Research Masters scholarship with the Department of Linguistics and English Language and the Language Technologies Unit (a research unit based at Canolfan Bedwyr) at Bangor University. The scholarship is funded through KESS 2 East, jointly with Bangor University, and will be run in collaboration with the Welsh Government’s Welsh Language Unit.

The Welsh Government seeks to ensure that it is fair and equitable in its dealings with all ethnic groups in Wales, in both the English and Welsh language. It therefore supports the proposed research which will result in guidelines and a bilingual (English/Welsh) glossary of appropriate terms in formats suitable for use in translation technology tools and computer systems.

The KESS 2 East scholarship will cover UK/EU registration fees plus a maintenance stipend of £11,702 per annum, along with a budget to support delivery of the project (equipment, travel, conferences, training etc.).

Requirements

The successful applicant will have a first class or 2:1 undergraduate degree in Welsh, Linguistics or a related subject, preferably with direct experience of ethnic communities in Wales or a proven interest in ethnic diversity and linguistic sensitivity. Applicants must be fluent in Welsh, both oral and written. Applications from minority ethnic communities will be particularly welcome.

Why apply for this KESS 2 East Research Masters?

Bangor University has a strong record of terminology research on the Welsh language since the establishment of the Centre for the Standardization of the Welsh Language in 1993. The Centre became part of Canolfan Bedwyr in 2001, forming the The Language Technologies Unit, which is internationally renowned for research in terminology, speech, text and translation technologies for less-resourced languages. In addition to its computational experts, the LTU currently employs six terminologists working on various terminology dictionaries. Further developments have strengthened its partnership with the Department of Linguistics and English Language, which will provide the academic base for the successful Research Masters candidate. The Department of Linguistics and English Language has a strong academic reputation, with expertise in Welsh and Bilingualism, and has already successfully completed a number of KESS 2-funded PhD and Research Masters jointly with the LTU.

The Welsh Government’s Welsh Language Unit oversees support of the Welsh language, in line with the Welsh Government’s strategic policies and vision to see the Welsh language thriving in Wales.

The successful KESS 2 East Research Masters candidate will become a part of the Department and will be expected to contribute to the research and academic life of the university.
