KESS 2 East Studentship on The State of the City Region: Developing a Data Visualisation Tool

Project Description

The main aim of the project is to establish a data set and form of digital tools and visualisations to help the Economic Growth Partnership and the Cardiff Capital Region Cabinet to track development trends and benchmark the region’s performance over time. As well as providing a rich evidence base to inform decision-making across the CCR, a further aim of this project is to better understand the very varied economic and social geography of the region, and the scale of both the opportunities and the challenges facing those charged with finding ways to grow and spread economic opportunities in a truly transformative way. In so doing, the project will connect to smart city debates and the politics of big urban data and governance by exploring who will use the data dashboard and with what effects. Key deliverables will include:

• A functional data dashboard for use by key stakeholders across the city region;
• A critical evaluation of the dashboard’s utility and role in assisting CCR decision-makers with investment based on a small number of tests of its utility and effectiveness.

A parallel studentship will commence at the same time exploring the role of key economic sectors in the city region.
