School of Medical and Health Sciences

Dr Cynog Prys  Wednesday, October 26, 2022  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Title: Arferion gwylio cynnwys Cymraeg yn yr oes ddigidol / Welsh language viewing habits in the digital age.

Location: Ysgol Hanes, Y Gyfraith a Gwyddorau Cymdeithas // School of History, Law and Social Sciences

IMPORTANT: Applicants must be fluent in both English and Welsh.

This is an exciting opportunity to study for a Research Masters (MxRes) degree through the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship scheme (KESS 2 East). An eligible student will receive the scholarship to undertake academic study in collaboration with Bangor University and one of Wales' leading television production companies, Rondo Media. This project will include elements of language planning within the digital domain, and market research work with Rondo Media. As a result, this innovative project is bridging both the academic discipline of language policy and planning, and the broadcast industry in Wales.

The project aims to learn more about who is the audience for Rondo Media's productions and digital content. The project will examine how individuals of various ages, geographies and linguistic backgrounds view and engage with some of S4C's most popular productions. As part of the project the study will analyse viewing patterns of programs (e.g. live or on-demand) and also examine the alternative ways in which audiences in Wales engage with programs on social media (including Facebook, Twitter , Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and others).

The project will provide important information for the broadcasting industry in Wales and also contribute to our understanding of the role of broadcasting, and online content, in language revitalization. The data collected will be of interest to organizations with an interest in language planning in Wales and beyond.

Informal inquiries about the project should be made to the project supervisor: Dr Cynog Prys ()

To apply please send a CV and covering letter to Cynog Prys () cc’ing Penny Dowdney ().

Dyma gyfle gwych i gyflawni gradd Meistr mewn Ymchwil (Mhres) drwy gynllun Ysgoloriaeth Sgiliau Economi Gwybodaeth (KESS 2 Dwyrain). Bydd myfyriwr cymwys yn derbyn y ysgoloriaeth i gynnal astudiaeth academaidd ar y cyd gyda Phrifysgol Bangor ac un o brif gwmnïau cynhyrchu teledu Cymru, sef Rondo Media. Bydd y prosiect hwn yn cynnwys elfennau o gynllunio ieithyddol o fewn y parth digidol, a gwaith ymchwil farchnad ar y cyd gyda Rondo Media. O ganlyniad mae’r prosiect arloesol hwn yn pontio rhwng y byd academaidd a’r diwydiant darlledu a chreu cynnwys digidol yng Nghymru.

Nod y prosiect yw dysgu mwy am bwy yw cynulleidfa rhaglenni a chynnwys digidol Rondo Media. Bydd y prosiect yn astudio’r modd y mae unigolion o oedran, ardaloedd a chefndiroedd ieithyddol amrywiol yn gwylio ac ymgysylltu gyda rhai o gynyrchiadau mwyaf poblogaidd S4C. Fel rhan o’r prosiect bydd yr astudiaeth yn dadansoddi patrymau gwylio rhaglenni (e.e. yn fyw neu ar-alw) a hefyd yn astudio’r dulliau amgen y mae cynulleidfaoedd yng Nghymru yn ymwneud a rhaglenni ar y cyfryngau cymdeithasol (gan gynnwys Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube ac eraill).

Bydd y prosiect yn daprau gwybodaeth bwysig ar gyfer y diwydiant darlledu yng Nghymru a hefyd yn cyfrannu at ein dealltwriaeth o rôl darlledu, a chynnwys ar-lein, mewn adfywio iaith. Bydd a data a gesglir felly o ddiddordeb i sefydliadau sydd â diddordeb mewn cynllunio ieithyddol yng Nghymru a thu hwnt.

Rhaid i’r ymgeisydd fod yn rhugl yn y Gymraeg a’r Saesneg.
