KESS2 PhD Scholarship: Enabling Community Change – Grand Avenues

Project Outline:
HMPPS in Wales are leading on the development and implementation of the Reducing Harm and Reoffending Proof of Concept. The remit of the Proof of Concept is that offenders in a specific geographical area (Ely/Caerau) have access to the ‘right’ interventions and effective ways of working to maximise the likelihood of successful, sustained rehabilitation. This will be achieved through enhanced assessment of the individual and community needs, trialling innovative community interventions and engaging local communities to reduce risk, harm and reoffending. The successful PhD candidate would identify the priorities of the service users and their families in the scope of the project, explore effective intervention in these areas, consider the redirection of resources away from unnecessary intervention and consider the gaps. When this is complete, the second phase would be recommending interventions and evaluating them. It is likely that some of the suggested interventions will not be implemented within the life of this PhD project as changing public sector funding and focus takes time. In this case the researcher will support the project team to develop a programme of future evaluation.

The scholarship offers all eligible participants (student):
• KESS PhD Scholarship holders do not pay fees;
• A monthly stipend in line with RCUK rates: 3 years of funding @ £14,628 per year for PhD
• An additional budget to support your research of £3,000 for travel, conference attendance, minor equipment, consumables and training
• An opportunity to access a suite of higher level skills training & attendance at a residential KESS Grad School
• A minimum of 30 days a year working with the company partner on their allocated project
• Students must complete & submit their thesis within 3.5 years for PhD
• All participants must complete the KESS Postgraduate Skills Development Award

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants should have UK or EU Citizenship, and be resident in the convergence area of Wales on appointment (or be studying in or working in the convergence area immediately prior to starting the project), and should have the right to work in the region on qualification. Residence confirmed by providing documents such as driver’s licence, tenancy agreement or recent statement from bank or building society.
