About the Project

Powerful magnets are crucial to the operation of low emission electric vehicles. This research degree will help to develop materials for magnets that can be sustainably sourced. We are looking for applicants to work on the next generation of electric cars with our partners at Evectek Ltd. This is a fully funded 1 year MRes project.

Decarbonising transport is crucial in addressing the looming climate emergency. Through this Project you will develop the technology required to enable the clean and efficient electric vehicles needed for this transition. This Project is sponsored by Evectek which is developing an innovative electrohydraulic propulsion system for low carbon vehicles.

Magnets are key components of the motors found in electric cars. Many of these rely on rare-earth metals that are extracted at considerable financial and environmental cost. The aim of this Project is to develop magnets based on sustainable and responsibly sourced materials. The Project will combine advanced modelling and experimental techniques to produce alternatives to the rare-earths used at present allowing the environmental impact of electric cars to be further decreased.


Research Masters
During your Masters Degree you will have the chance to work closely and learn from the scientists and engineers in Bangor University’s Extreme Materials Research Group. You will also have regular contact and receive guidance from the skilled mechanical and automotive engineers working to bring Evectek’s advanced technologies to market.

The Project will be led at Bangor by Dr. Michael Rushton who has broad experience of materials science and engineering from modelling to manufacture. He will be supported by Dr. Lee Evitts (physics), Dr. Simon Middleburgh (materials) and Dr. James Wang (laser coating). Your industrial supervisor will be George Ryton, the inventor of Evectek’s innovative drive system who brings a wealth of engineering experience from motorsport – i.e. Formula 1 (including Ferrari, Minardi and Tyrell) – and may other sectors to the Project and will ensure the industrial relevance of your work.

Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships (KESS 2) is a pan-Wales higher level skills initiative led by Bangor University on behalf of the HE sector in Wales. It is part funded by the Welsh Government’s European Social Fund (ESF) convergence programme for West Wales and the Valleys.
