KESS2 Scholarship: Investigation of magnetic properties of thin laminations in electric machines

Project Description

This is a funded PhD, including a generous stipend and tuition fees, with well-resourced circumstances for a successful scholarship.

Here is an exciting opportunity to study a novel methodology to design and develop a novel electric machine using new magnetic materials which could lead to entirely new approaches in development and manufacturing of electric machines.

Programme of research:

The overall aim of this project is to revolutionise electrical steel lamination manufacturing by developing a novel laser cutting method of electrical steels to optimise the productivity and quality of the cutting process.
The main work to be undertaken in this project is to design and implement a novel laser cutting technique for cutting thin laminations which will maintain the mechanical and magnetic properties of the electrical steel laminations to be used in electric machines.

The project is backed by Wiltan Limited is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of grain and non-grain oriented strip wound cores in electrical steels, both cut and uncut; and cut laminations for use in the transformer and associated electrical industries. The company mainly focuses on manufacturing of transformer cores and wound cores for various transformer and other electrical applications. The company mainly focuses on specialist steel transformer cores and now goes beyond the supply of standard associated products of transformer cores and wound cores – it represents a new form of collaboration on developing pioneer applications for ultra-thin electrical steel laminations for electrical motors. Wiltan Limited has developed a range of new electrical steel laminations suitable for verity of electrical machine applications. The company is now developing advanced electric steel laminations and magnetic core technology for electric vehicle motors, based on the company existing products (electrical steel laminations used for transformer cores and wound cores).

Funding Notes

The studentship will cover the fees for a full-time PhD programme and pay a stipend of circa £14k p.a. There is also around £9k project support costs available for consumables, travel, minor equipment, training (including the KESS Grad School) and conference attendance.

The position is available from April 2020
