Key determinants of success for career progression in Rugby League

Project Description

Leeds Rhinos Rugby League sponsored Research Bursaries in collaboration with Leeds Beckett University
Full-time Sponsored Postgraduate Research Student Bursaries start date – February 2020

Rugby league clubs are required to develop talent to progress into senior squads. In practice, a large volume of data exists on players (e.g., physical characteristics, performance analysis variables, physical output variables [via microtechnology]) yet rarely are these evaluated concurrently via robust analysis techniques. For example, studies exist investigating how physical characteristics influence career progression (Till et al., 2016 [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26197941]) and physical outputs during a match differ between selected and unselected (Waldron et al. 2014 [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24576143] rugby league players. To date, advanced data science techniques have not been applied to these data sources, to deal with their inherent complexity (e.g., Weaving et al., 2019 [https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0211776], Till et al., 2016 [https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0155047], Beggs et al., 2017 [https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0178458]).

The successful candidate will be embedded within Leeds Rhinos providing Sports Science support to Reserve/Transitioning players. The practical commitment will not exceed 15 hours per week, allowing the candidate to undertake innovative research, whilst developing an awareness of the practical constraints in rugby league. The successful candidate should have excellent data analytical skills to undertake this project and an interest in practical coaching.

Funding Notes

The PhD studentship will have a bursary of £15,009 per annum (pro-rata into 12 monthly payments) plus UK/EU Fees paid initially for a period of three years.
