About the Project

In the UK, over 5 million businesses are family-owned, representing approximately 86% of the total companies. Undoubtedly, family businesses are contributing to the nation’s GDP compared to non-family-owned businesses. A significant amount of these family-owned businesses are small and medium-sized.

This PhD project aims to deliver rich theoretical contributions and meaningful implications to the family business leaders in cultivating certain leadership styles/behaviours to knack firm-specific dynamic capabilities that are pivotal in current times to navigate exogenous shocks globally. As the outrages of exogenous shocks (e.g. COVID) on small and medium-sized firms are much higher compared to the larger firms, therefore, meaningful and feasible leadership is required to harvest by these family-firm leaders to develop the specific capabilities that are urgently needed. Because the opportunity cost is higher for small and medium-sized firms as they do not enjoy the luxury of abundant resources and capital, therefore, required to pour recourses very cautiously. A little bit of inadvertence by the family business leaders in those small and medium-sized firms can cause fatal results and eventually question the survival of the firms.

Aim of the project:

This PhD research project aims to investigate the type of leadership styles/behaviours of family-firm leaders and their impact on firm-specific dynamic capabilities that are required to complement the international growth continuum of the firm.

Methodology:

Quantitative study: a time-lagged survey on data from family firms.
