Dr A Mey  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)

About the Project

A PhD studentship is available jointly between the groups of Dr Antonia Mey (School of Chemistry, The University of Edinburgh; http://mey-research.org ) and Dr Davide Michieletto (School of Physics and Astronomy, The University of Edinburgh; https://www2.ph.ed.ac.uk/~dmichiel/).

Project Summary

The groups of Antonia Mey and Davide Michieletto are looking for a talented and motivated candidate to carry out research at the interface of soft matter, biophysics, modelling, and machine learning for a 3.5-year fully funded PhD studentship.

Proteins and DNA are responsible for most functions and dysfunction in living organisms. There is great interest in understanding how DNA is regulated by proteins and when dysfunction of these proteins leads to disease. To gain a better understanding of how certain proteins bind and manipulate DNA, we will use a combination of soft matter experimental methods and machine learning approaches to study this in detail.

In this project, you will set up and establish a new integrated workflow combining experimental and computational methods with machine learning. The experimental part will use high throughput tools to study the properties of dense DNA samples. The idea is to be able to modulate these properties via proteins and via interactions with small molecules. By scanning through many different small molecule additives, you will be able to quantify the effects of the additives on the properties of interest of the protein/DNA system.

You will also use computational methods to quantify and understand the interactions between proteins and small molecules at an atomistic level. The overall goal will be to optimise the design of certain small molecule additives by combining both experimental and computational data in a machine-learning-driven automated workflow.

Interested? Do you have a background in a science discipline and are curious about using both experimental and computational tools to address biomolecular problems related to drug discovery? Are you excited by the potential of exploring commercialisation opportunities from the outcome of your research? Have you achieved or do you expect to get a first-class or high 2.1 honours degree? Then please direct any informal enquiries or full applications (CV, Cover Letter, and Transcripts) to Dr Antonia Mey ([Email Address Removed] ) School of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh, David Brewster Road, Edinburgh EH9 3FJ, UK.

The position will remain open until filled.

IMPORTANT

Before Submitting your cover letter and CV, please complete the online School of Chemistry Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Form 2023. The form will automatically generate a unique “Receipt Number” that you MUST include in your cover letter.
