About the Project

Leeds United Football Club and the Carnegie School of Sport - Funded Masters by Research (MRes) - Starting November 2020

This is an exciting opportunity for a funded MRes with Leeds United First Team as a Data Science Internship – 2020/21 Season

Leeds United Football Club are providing a fee funded Masters by Research (MRes) opportunity as part of an ongoing relationship between Leeds Beckett University (Carnegie School of Sport) and Leeds United Football Club. In this unique opportunity the successful candidates will support the Leeds United First Team Sport Science department to explore insights into the training process of elite footballers by assisting with data management, modelling and visualisation processes relating to training load and response data.

The MRes will examine
• The influence of training/match loads on acute (e.g. ‘fatigue and recovery’) and chronic responses (e.g. ‘fitness’)
• How player characteristics (e.g. strength, speed, prolonged intermittent running ability) moderate these relationships

As part of the application process candidates are expected to develop a research proposal aligned to one of the above themes (see proposal criteria below). The specific research questions will then be developed between the successful applicant, LUFC Sport Science staff and the MRes supervisory team.

This role will predominately involve remote work and will focus on the development of a specific aspect of the clubs monitoring and reporting system. As part of this, the role will involve the creation and verbal/written presentation of reports back to Club staff via online delivery. However, there may be some opportunities to deliver some of this directly at the club dependent on the COVID19 situation and Club guidelines. Leeds United Football Club will contribute a fee bursary to cover the full MRes fees and additional stipend of £2500 will be provided. The MRes position will run from November 2020 until September 2021.

We are seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic student who will fully engage in the dynamic and vibrant research environment offered by the Carnegie School of Sport and the project at Leeds United. The outstanding quality of our School of Sport research was confirmed in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, where we ranked 2nd nationally when accounting for both research quality and the number of contributing staff (Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism). The School delivers international research excellence through its research centres and strategic research areas. The interdisciplinary and applied nature of much of our research means that students work on challenging problems and have extensive opportunities to develop new and valuable skills.

Candidate Requirements
Essential
• BSc in Data Science or Sport, Health and Exercise Science
• Demonstrable experience of managing data from different sources using appropriate software (e.g. R Studio, Python, MATLAB)
• Experience of visualising, modelling and reporting data to provide actionable insight into important outcomes for organisations

Desirable
• Awareness of unsupervised (e.g. clustering) and supervised (e.g. random forest, support vector machine) approaches and how to handle imbalanced datasets
