The UCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has a world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from the molecular scale to the scale of industrial plants. It hosts 28 academics whose research is collaborative, ground-breaking and focused on solving societal problems.

The department is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated PhD student to advance the use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the construction sector to support decision-making. This post is co-funded by UCL Estates and Mace. Mace is an international consultancy and construction company who develop, consult, construct and operate some of the world’s most inspiring buildings and infrastructure programmes. Mace are helping UCL deliver UCL East Phase 1, UCL’s new campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London. UCL East is the most strategic major project UCL has embarked on since its foundation in 1826. It is a University campus fit for the 21st century and beyond; Phase 1 will provide UCL with 50,000sqm of new and innovative spaces for teaching and research, and students’ living (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-east/).

The post holder will work in collaboration with Mace and have the potential opportunity to have a short placement at one of Mace’s offices. This project is part of both UCL and Mace’s sustainability strategies and will help both organisations reduce their environmental impact.

The post is fully funded for 3.5 years.

STUDENTSHIP DESCRIPTION:

 

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology is used to quantify the environmental impacts of products or technologies from “cradle to grave” and is widely adopted in academia as well as industries and governmental bodies. This studentship is focused on advancing the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the construction sector to support decision-making.

The project will aim at developing an approach for accurate estimations of the life-cycle environmental impacts of buildings - in particular before they are built, by using data from Building Information Modelling (BIM) and other models. The project will look at the issue of plastic consumption at construction sites and will develop detailed inventories for modelling the construction of buildings, including for mechanical, electrical and plumping and public health 2

(MEPH). The project will benefit from unique access to real-world data on the construction of existing buildings at the UCL East campus.

The post-holder is expected to present results at international conferences and in peer-reviewed journal articles of high international standing.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

The successful candidate will have completed or be near to complete a first-class degree at the MEng or MSc level in Chemical Engineering, Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.

The successful candidate will be a dedicated student, with an interest in sustainability and environmental issues, with advanced understanding of mass and energy balances and, preferably, also of building information modelling (BIM).

Willingness to perform independently, yet within a collaborative environment, within a world-class competitive and highly demanding environment are a must.

Demonstrable prior knowledge of research methods and modelling approaches are desirable, but not necessary requirements.
