Campus: South Kensington, London

The Heng Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London welcomes applications for a PhD studentship to conduct work in the area of particle technology, formulation and manufacturing. The studentship is funded by the UKRI’s Engineering and Physical Science Research Council Industrial CASE grant. You will be based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus) under the supervision of Professor Jerry Heng. The focus of this studentship is to link zeolite physical/chemical properties to flow behaviour, in collaboration with scientists and engineers at Johnson Matthey, UK.

Zeolites are important catalysts and adsorbents. In the production of zeolites; crystallisation, drying, calcination, grinding and storage/discharge/transport are critical in ensuring high quality products and manufacture. All these processes require some knowledge on powder flow behaviour of zeolites. Powder flow behaviour is very much dependent upon the conditions (humidity, temperature etc.) and the stresses involved for each process.  A range of characterisation methods for determination of the powder flow behaviour is available, though suitability of each method can be variable. The aim of this project is to develop an understanding of the impact of zeolite chemical/physical properties on the powder flow behaviour in different processes.

Applicants are expected to have obtained (or be heading for) a first or upper-second degree at master’s level (or equivalent) in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry or physics and be highly motivated. The current stipend is £17,285 per annum. In addition, home fees will be covered. To be eligible for support, applicants must be ‘UK Residents' as defined by the EPSRC.

Applicants should also be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, which will be essential in collaborating with industrial partners, and disseminating the results via journal publications. As well as conducting your own research, you will work with a team of researchers, providing support to their projects; and be responsible for maintaining safe working practices.

Applications should be made through the College’s online application system:
