About the Project

Tutor: Remo Proietti Zaccaria

Tremendous efforts have been done in the last decades towards the development of highly efficient secondary batteries. Li-ion batteries, with their well established fundamentals, do indeed represent a very viable energy storage device, surely very safe and characterized by affordable cost. Here we aim to embrace the concept of sulphur-lithium (LiS) batteries as they have been showing the capability to reach higher energy density than Li-ion batteries, in fact as high as 500 Wh/kg and, at the same time, maintaining limited cost owing to the natural abundance of sulphur. In particular, the main objective of this project will be to identify the best strategies for the realization of a LiS battery that should target the aerospace sector, where safety and weight together with performance are primary requirements.

The experimental activity will be run within the DELTA Lab of the Italian Institute of Technology, where state of the art instruments both for synthesis and characterization will be at disposal of the candidate. The activity will be run in collaboration with CNITECH one of the institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) specialized in material engineering.

Requirements:

The candidates should have an experimental background in electrochemistry, material science, chemistry or physics with possibly some experience in battery preparation and analysis. Importantly, candidates should be driven by strong work dedication. Work experience in the theoretical design of a battery will be positively considered.
