Long-term forecasting for social good
The successful candidate will be enrolled on the PhD in Business and Management at Cardiff Business School.
Long term forecasting (over 10- 15 years) horizon is important for organisation to frame strategy and make investment decisions. This project would focus on how different companies approach forecasting over the long range, the factors they consider and how they ensure that this is robust.
Currently there is limited data and methodology available on how long-range forecasting is set in different companies and majority of the research and methodologies available focuses on short and mid-range horizons. We investigate how organisations approach long term forecasting; what models are currently used and how their accuracy is measured. We identify best practices and available methodologies across profit and social good organisations and propose innovative methodologies for long term forecasting in social good. This is extremely important in many organisations with societal missions in healthcare and humanitarian.
The ideal candidate has a specialist Master Degree in Operations Research, Operations Management, Industrial Engineering or related subjects from an internationally renowned University. Applicants with a strong first degree will also be considered. The ideal applicant has the motivation and ability to develop industry links and conduct fieldwork; is keen to conduct mixed-method research, with emphasis on both modelling and qualitative methods (i.e. interviews, observation). Ideally, the candidate has previous academic knowledge and/or work experience in the area of modelling and forecasting.
