Low-Order Analysis of Interfacial Flows

Project Description

Thin-film flows arise in a huge number of practical applications in industry, biology and everyday life, including industrial coating processes, printing, droplet evaporation, the mucus lining of the human lung, biofilms as well as rain on a window or treacle dripping from a spoon.

Low-order models based on the famous lubrication approximation have proved a very powerful tool for analysing such thin-film flows. They are amenable to a variety of analytical and numerical methods which may be used to gain insight into the underlying physical processes at work in these flows.

The aim of the present studentship project is to build on the supervisors’ extensive experience in the analytical and numerical solution of low-order models to tackle a number of exciting and challenging thin-film flow problems. The exact focus of the student would be subject to discussion and agreement between the student and supervisors, but there are a number of exciting possible opportunities. These include problems that span the spectrum from novel analytical work through to unsolved problems with direct applications in industry.

Funding Notes

This PhD project is available on a self-funded basis, however the supervisors are happy to work with potential applicants to apply for a number of different studentship schemes (both internal and external to the University of Strathclyde) which support such projects.

Tuition fees for 2017/2018 for postgraduate research students at the University of Strathclyde are £4,195 for home/EU students and £14,000 for international students.
