About the Project

The University of Melbourne is a public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. The Soil and Environment Research group at the School of Agriculture and Forest Ecosystems, Faculty of Science is seeking highly motivated PhD candidates to join the research team in 2023. This project aims to advance the simulation capacity and prediction reliability of process-based models in various nitrogen loss pathways to the environment, through the incorporation of machine-learning-based data analytics. The research findings are highly relevant to agricultural management, agricultural policy-making and environmental quality.

We are seeking a PhD candidate with the following skills:

·     Demonstrated experience in the field of agricultural and environmental sciences;

·     Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following areas: Machine Learning, Process-based modelling, Statistics, Data Analytics;

·     Demonstrated experience with programming languages such as Python, Matlab, R, and machine learning tools;

·     Demonstrated time and project management skills.

·     Demonstrated ability to write research reports or other publications to a publishable standard.

·     Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

·     Excellent written and oral communication skills.

To be eligible for the scholarship candidates must:

1.   meet the graduate entry requirements for the University of Melbourne:

·     have completed tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a 4-year honours degree in agriculture or related fields with a minimum result equivalent to a first-class Honours (80%);

or

·     have obtained or be about to obtain a master's degree (with ≥50% research project) in agriculture or related fields with a minimum result equivalent to a first-class Honours (80%);

·     meet the minimum English language requirements for admission to The University of Melbourne.

2.   be able to commence their PhD in late 2023 or early 2024.

 Stipend and fee offset scholarships.

·     Full fee offset for up to four years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.

·     Living allowance of $34,400 per year pro rata (2023 full-time study rate) for up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.
