Magnesium alloy implants: corrosion effects on its mechanical performance

Project Description

Resorbable metals, including magnesium- and iron-based metal alloy, were investigated intensively as biomaterials for production of orthopaedic implant and stents. Building upon recent developments in engineering magnesium biomaterials and mechanics of advanced materials, this project will investigate the influence of corrosion effects to the mechanical behaviour of implants. It will produce a knowledge base to inform and verify the functional design and engineering of novel absorbable metal materials.

The proposed work will focus on the following three technical aspects: 1) Influence of alloy element and polymer coating to the corrosion; 2) Analysis of the effect of surface microstructures induced by processing, forming and sterilisation on the corrosion behaviours; 3) To further promote the translation of outcomes from these fundamental investigation, depending on the background and experiences of the student, it would be further applied to predict the corrosion process and mechanical behavior of absorbable metals in complex physiological environment using mathematical modeling and finite element analysis.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in a related subject.

A relevant Master's degree and / or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Biomedical Engineering.
