Project Description

The Centre for Fusion, Space & Astrophysics of the Physics Department of the University of Warwick seek a candidate for an STFC-funded PhD studentship to work on wave and turbulence phenomena in the solar corona and solar wind. The project aims to advance wave-based plasma diagnostic techniques (“magnetohydrodynamic seismology”), contributing to our understanding of extreme events of Space Weather and their drivers, and improving their forecasting. The project includes analysis of the EUV, X-ray, radio and in situ data obtained with world-leading spaceborne and ground-based observational facilities (Solar Dynamics Observatory, Hinode, STEREO, Cluster, LOFAR, Nobeyama Radioheliograph), theoretical modelling of wave and turbulent processes in magnetised plasmas, and development of novel data analysis techniques. The project will be carried out in intensive collaboration with leading research teams in China, EU, Japan, Russia and USA.

Funding Notes

A full 3.5 year studentship for UK students (fees and maintenance) is available. Candidates should hold or expect to hold a 1st (or high 2.1) in Physics or related subject area.
