About the Project

Vacancy information

UCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK, and is a leader in battery research. This PhD studentship is funded for 4 years. The successful candidate will carry out cutting-edge experimental research in the area of lithium-ion battery safety at the intersection of engineering, chemistry, physics and materials science.

Studentship description

As we enter ‘the age of electrochemical power’ and transition from fossil fuels and internal combustion, the development of high-performance batteries is key. We need to understand the internal workings of these devices and also ensure they are safe. The successful candidate will join the SafeBatt program, led by UCL, and study critical aspects of battery operation through the development of novel acoustic and X-ray diagnostic techniques. This project will equip the successful student with the experience to enter an academic career or the rapidly expanding electrochemical energy storage industry (the electrification of road transport and pathway to net-zero). This studentship is funded via the UK Faraday Institution. Recipients will have access to multiple networking opportunities, industry visits, mentorship, internships, as well as quality experiences that will further develop knowledge, skills, and aspirations - Read more (https://www.faraday.ac.uk/education-skills/phd-researchers/). They will also benefit from a bespoke training programme (https://faraday.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/PhD_Training_Programme_Guide_2020-21.pdf)
