The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering was ranked first for research environment in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning in 2014, with 95% of research rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ for its influence on society, the economy and policy. The School boasts world class facilities, with one of the fastest High-Performance Computer clusters in the UK and a £1.4m investment in its 3,000m2 laboratory, home to the two 100kg payload robots that underpin the work of the Hybrid Concrete Printing Group.
Full Project Detail:
3D Concrete Printing is a digitally driven, off-site manufacturing technology establishing itself worldwide as a viable manufacturing process, but its potential is limited by the manufacturing tolerances achievable. This PhD will help develop the next generation technology and design tools that will enable the forming of large, precise geometries in concrete through combining additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques.
The studentship will be embedded between two significant research projects:

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. A relevant master’s degree and/or employment experience will be an advantage. A background in manufacturing and/or knowledge of control and automation, CAD/CAM, cementitious materials and/or design/digital workflow is desirable.
The three-year studentship is intended to start 1 October 2020. It provides a tax-free stipend of £15,285 a year (2019/20 rates – stipend will rise in line with the level set by the Research Council) for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.
