Manufacturing Induced Property Development Using Electromagnetic Pulse Technology

  • Full or part time
  • Application Deadline

  • Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)
Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)

Project Description

You will develop and optimise the use of a high velocity forming technology, known as electromagnetic pulse technology (EMPT) to increase the mechanical properties of AlMgSiCu aluminium alloys. The research will evaluate and develop the understanding of the use of forming at high strain rates equivalent to those achieved using explosive forming to extend ductility. A strong background in physical metallurgy is essential, and experience in microstructural characterisation is desirable.

The project will take place in BCAST’s Advanced Metals Casting Centre (AMCC) and Advanced Metals Processing Centre (AMPC), which are new scale-up facilities that bridge the gap between fundamental research and full scale industrialisation and are aimed at meeting the short, medium and long term needs of the automotive industry. The projects will be part of the activities of the Constellium University Technology Centre (UTC) established with BCAST. You will be interacting with researchers in BCAST and with Constellium’s industrial research engineers.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Isaac Chang, Head of LiME Training Centre at or +44(0)1895 268491
