About the Project

Understanding the mass transport mechanisms in micro channels and porous media is key in designing many engineering processes. The aim of this project is to investigate the mechanisms of fluid flow through porous materials with different morphology considering the interactions of ions with solid surfaces.

Through experimental tests and modelling tools, we explore the impact of porous media on the efficiency of reactive flow and ion transport. The outcomes of the project will provide models that are useful in designing many processes such as electrochemical energy storage systems (Li-ion and Ni-ion batteries), recycling critical earth minerals, among other, to support the energy transition in coming decades.

The experiments will be carried out using equipment facilities available in the School of Engineering.

Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit. The successful candidate should have, or expect to obtain, a UK Honours Degree at 2.1 or above in Engineering or Geoscience or Chemistry.

Sufficient research background and previous experience would be preferred.
