About the Project

Masters of Research Interdisciplinary Studies - Looking Back to Think Ahead: Researching the 'To-day and To-morrow' Essay Series

In 1923 a landmark multi-disciplinary book series called ‘To-Day and To-Morrow’ started to appear, launched with two brilliant provocations: Daedalus; or Science and the Future, by the geneticist J. B. S. Haldane; and the philosopher Bertrand Russell’s pessimistic response: Icarus, or the Future of Science. These books have a lasting legacy in the history of science and science popularisation. Less well-known is the fact that they spawned over 100 extraordinary short volumes by interesting writers speculating about the futures of different subjects, from sciences and arts to politics, society, sexuality, culture and everyday life. They deserve to be better-known.
