Project Description

An excellent opportunity for a research masters position (funded for one year) is available at Trinity College Dublin. The successful candidate will be based in Trinity College Dublin and will participate on the European Space Agency (ESA) project CETSOL (Columnar-to-Equiaxed Transition in Solidification). The CETSOL project is a long-running international project with partners from across ESA-participating countries and, recently, NASA-funded researchers. The objective of the CETSOL project is to study the formation of the Columnar to Equiaxed Transition (CET) in the microstructure during solidification of metallic alloys. Microgravity experiments have been conducted onboard the International Space Station (see The successful candidate will take existing computer models of CET and apply these models to the space station experiments.

The researcher will also perform solidification experiments in the laboratory using transparent materials which solidify in the same way to metal alloys.

The research will be co-supervised by Adjunct Assistant Professor Dr. Shaun McFadden and Associate Professor Anthony Robinson. It is intended that the successful candidate will start the position in March 2016.

€16,000 stipend for one year plus academic fees (full fees for EU, partial fee payable for non EU)
