About the Project

Students will be enrolled on the PhD in Economics at Cardiff Business School. The ideal candidate has a specialist Master Degree in Economics, Statistics or related subjects from an internationally renowned University. Applicants with a strong first degree in Economics and Econometrics will also be considered.

Land is a key limiting resource in many regions of the world, including the UK. Society depends on land resources for many purposes. We require these land resources to be resilient to environmental change and to meet increasing demands for housing and also renewable energy, recreation and climate change mitigation. Therefore, land use and land-use decision making are at the forefront of our fight for sustainability and sustainable development.

The main focus of this project is to explore mathematical and statistical challenges associated with making use of new high-resolution data on land use with the aim of shedding light on the land-use decision-making process. In particular, this project intends to construct methods to best study (a) the complex interplay between various land uses, on the one hand, and the physical environment and climatic and other economic factors on the other and (b) how/to what extent other external factors, such as changes in climate patterns, affect the inter-relationship described in (a).
