Project Description

The demand for objective, measurement-based means of diagnosing human (also animal and plant) diseases is ever increasing. At the same time, advances in fundamental and applied research are creating ever more opportunities for developing powerful new diagnostic tools. However, there is a technology gap between measurements that work well in the laboratory and diagnostic devices that can be used in clinical settings and uncontrolled environments. The aim of this project is to develop a technology to bridge this gap for one specific type of measurement, but in a way that can be applied more generally to other types of measurement.

The specific diagnosis that would form the focus of this project is skin barrier function, which is linked with a number of skin diseases and even food allergies in children. London South Bank University has a track-record of research in this area, including the commercial exploitation of two university patents via the spin-out company Biox Systems Ltd (

The core of the project would be measurement method research, to find a way to adapt the university’s patented technology to clinical use. Alongside this, there would need to be research into implementation technologies including low-power, cordless operation, signal evaluation, diagnosis display, data logging, and wireless data transmission.

The scholarship duration is 3 years (full-time study), supervised jointly by Dr Perry Xiao (academic supervisor) and Dr Elliott Berg (industrial supervisor).
The financial package covers tuition fees and a tax-free bursary of £15k per year. Candidates should be qualified to BSc, BEng or MSc level of first-class standard or equivalent grade-point average, in a specialisation relevant to the project, such as electronics, physics measurement science, computer engineering, embedded systems design, etc. Apply by e-mailing or otherwise sending your CV with scans/copies of relevant qualifications to Dr Perry Xiao at the address below, with a closing date for applications of 12th February 2016.
