This project is an exciting opportunity to undertake industrially linked research in partnership with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). It will be based within the Intelligent Automation Centre (IAC) of the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough University which amongst its wider research interests is renowned for cutting edge research in applied metrology and robotics.
The PhD Project
This project seeks to tackle the challenges of acquiring 3D reconstructions of large-scale assets by developing a methodology for fusing data from multiple mobile robotic systems across spatially and temporally distributed environments. The goal is to enable automated mobile robotic systems to perform real-time, scalable, and cost-effective monitoring and inspection across sectors such as construction, aerospace, nuclear, and transport. This PhD offers a unique opportunity to develop high-demand skills in advanced mobile robotics, data fusion, precision metrology, and data-intensive processing, leveraging techniques such as Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Loughborough University has an applied research culture. In REF 2021, 94% of the work submitted was judged to be top-rated as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'. We are a community based on mutual support and collaboration. It provides a prestigious and inclusive environment for research, with a thriving doctoral community. PhD students receive generous additional funds to support individual development, including opportunity to attend conferences, and training programs.
