About the Project

We have an exciting new PhD study funded by a Royal Society NZ Marsden grant. The study will reveal how subtle sub-micron scale collagen network changes, in early degeneration of soft tissues, may be related to macro length scale non-invasive tissue imaging using optical coherence tomography (OCT). For this project, the PhD student will investigate the mechanical response of cartilage tissue, as a function of its structural response, and develop the integrative technology that links these functional indicators to OCT imaging. The purpose it to develop a viable system that can perform early diagnosis of degeneration in the joint tissues.

The student we are looking for is one with an physics or engineering background (preferably in mechanical, biomedical, or materials engineering) and a keen interest in carrying out experimental work.

Techniques the student will learn for this study will include mechanical testing of soft tissues using a range of materials testing machines, multi-length scale tissue structure imaging using differential interference contrast optical light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and image data processing from OCT.

This PhD will be supervised by Prof Frederique Vanholsbeeck Dr Cushla McGoverin from the Physics Department, Faculty of Science, and Professor Ashvin Thambyah from the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.
