About the Project

The University of Bath is inviting applications for the following fully funded PhD project commencing in August 2022 or earlier.

Project

Would you like to join the leading centre for theoretical, experimental and analytical research into powertrain systems in the UK? The Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) at the University of Bath is recruiting a fully funded PhD student. We are seeking highly motivated graduates to work alongside the existing research team in support our EPSRC funded Prosperity Partnership, "Centre of Excellence in Hybrid Thermal Propulsion Systems" in collaboration with Oxford University, Jaguar Land Rover and Siemens Digital Industries.

The project aim is to develop a thermal propulsion system that, when combined with a matched hybrid energy recovery system, will be capable of powering a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) from an energy dense liquid fuel at an equivalent or lower economic and environmental cost than would be incurred by importing electricity directly to the vehicle from the EU average grid. Areas of fundamental research open to the PhD student include modelling and validation of:

  • Low and High grade waste heat management and recovery technologies
  • Boosting systems and air path design for ultra high efficiency engines
  • Advanced Multi-cylinder engine concept testing , data evaluation and optimisation

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should hold, or expect to receive, a First Class or good Upper Second Class Honours degree (or the equivalent) in Engineering or a related subject. A master’s level qualification would also be advantageous.

Funding Eligibility

Funding Notes

Candidates applying for this project will be considered for a 3-year University of Bath Studentship which will cover tuition fees at the ‘Home’ rate, a training support fee of £1,000 per annum and a tax-free maintenance allowance at the UKRI Doctoral Stipend rate (£15,609 for 2021/22). In order to be eligible for funding, applicants must qualify as a ‘Home’ student - see Funding Eligibility section above.
