Metal matrix composites (MMCs) present remarkable properties by combining the properties of the metal matrix and of ceramic reinforcement. The application of such materials includes electronic and optical instruments, components for high performance structures (e.g., aircrafts), armour and protection components, etc. Metal matrix composites combine metallic properties (ductility and toughness) with ceramic properties (high strength and high elastic modulus) leading to outstanding performance. For example, MMCs can have high strength combined with low density, better fatigue behaviour than conventional aluminium alloys, controlled thermal expansion, excellent wear properties and resistance to mechanical and thermal shocks. However, their application is impeded by the lack of knowledge about welding of such materials and, in general, how to join them. Therefore, development of cost effective and technically suitable joining technologies is a critical step on the route to successful exploitation of MMCs.
The project will address the problem of joining aluminium alloy matrix composites with itself (homogeneous joining) or with unreinforced aluminium alloy (heterogeneous joining) with particular interest in energy industry applications. The focus will be on modelling the strength joints produced by different technologies aimed at optimising the joint configuration depending on the properties and geometries of the components.
Selection will be made on the basis of academic merit. The successful candidate should have, or expect to obtain, a UK Honours degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in applied mathematics, solid mechanics, engineering or materials science (or an equivalent qualification).
