Project Description

Buruli ulcer is an ulcerative disease that occurs most commonly in sub-Saharan Africa. It is caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, a bacterium that secretes an ulcerating substance mycolactone and is found in aquatic biofilms in the water bodies used by people - most often children - who get Buruli ulcer. This project is to model the composition of biofilms containing M. ulcerans, with the aim of understanding the role of mycolactone in the biofilm ecosystem. The ultimate aim is to contribute to the understanding of how Buruli ulcer is spread. There is potential for collaboration with experimentalists and field ecologists
