Project Description

The wind induced forces on crops can be significant and is a complex issue. The damage from wind can severely affect the overall yield loss, which can have significant economic implications, e.g., it is estimated that during a severe year UK costs can be of the order of £170 million. These estimates do not include the additional costs of greater grain drying, loss of bread making quality and longer harvesting time. The proposed research will combine the expertise of civil and structure engineers with crop physiologists in order to investigate lodging (the permeant discipline of the crop due to wind) in oats. The research will explore the applicability in field conditions of a theoretical model which has been developed by the team to assess lodging in oats. The model will then be further developed and used investigate which plant parameters affect lodging the most and to specify the plant character values required for lodging profess The effect of possible climate change on the risk of lodging in the crop will also be investigated through the model.
