Modular mass timber building for the circular economy

Project Description

Project Background:
The supply of raw material from Irish forests is set to double in the period 2017-2035. The provides an opportunity to address the infrastructure needs of a growing population by developing sustainable building solutions based on modern timber engineering, while at the same time creating employment opportunities in the sector.

Project Outline:
This PhD project, ‘Modular mass timber building for the circular economy’, will involve the design, development and testing of a modular building solution, which maximises the use of Irish timber, is optimised for end-of-life reuse and is suited to precision manufacturing offsite.
The successful candidate will work alongside experienced researchers and five industry partners in the delivery of the project outcomes and will have access to state-of-the-art test facilities at NUI Galway.
