About the Project

Applications are invited for our EPSRC funded Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) PhD studentship for the project titled “Molecular Fluid Dynamics - Multiscale Modelling of Turbulence” starting 1st October 2021. 

This exciting research project represents the next generation of fluid-dynamics research through the first ever computational simulation of molecular turbulence. This project will unlock a new research area combining the fundamental physics of molecular motion with engineering fluid dynamics to solve some of the biggest problems facing industry and science. By utilising novel machine learning and data analytical techniques we will ensure these cutting-edge molecular models have direct impact to engineering industry.

In your application, you should demonstrate your ability to:

·      Solve complex scientific and engineering problems;

·      Apply Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or Molecular Dynamics (MD);

·      Program in Python or other languages;

You will join the internationally recognised researchers in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and work with a group of doctoral researchers supervised by Dr Edward Smith

Applicants will have or be expected to receive a first or upper-second class honours degree in an Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or a similar discipline. A Postgraduate Masters degree is not required but may be an advantage.  

Experience in solving partial differential equations with both mathematical and numerical methods along with knowledge of fluid dynamics and machine learning are all an advantage. In addition, you should be highly motivated, able to work in a team, collaborate with others and have good communication skills.

·      Your personal statement (300 to 500 words) summarising your background, skills and experience;

·      Your Undergraduate/Postgraduate Masters degree certificate(s) and transcript(s);

·      Evidence of your English language skills to IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent, 6.0 in all sections), if appropriate;

·      Contact details for TWO referees, one of which can be an academic member of staff in the College.

Funding Notes

The successful applicant will receive an annual stipend (bursary) of £17,609, including inner London weighting, plus payment of their full-time home tuition fees for a period of 36 months (3 years). You must be eligible for home tuition fees either through nationality, residency or other connection to the UK. The start date is 1 October 2021.
