About the Project

A scholarship ($29,863 per year for up to 3.5 years) is available for a cross-disciplinary PhD project.

Location. You will be based in the University of South Australia's Future Industries Institute and living in Adelaide, which has been ranked the world's third most liveable city in 2021.

How to apply. Please e-mail your expression of interest to Prof Benjamin Thierry ([Email Address Removed]), including a CV and the names and contact information of three referees. The position will be filled asap so early applications are encouraged. Due to the high volume of application, only short-listed applicants will be contacted.

If you’re motivated to build a career in bioengineering and keen to develop better outcomes for brain cancer, the University of South Australia is offering a PhD scholarship within its Future Industries Institute, in partnership with precision cancer treatment company Ferronova.

There is a critical need for practice-redefining treatments that increase survival of brain cancer patients, and/or improve the quality of life of survivors. Image-guided tumour neurosurgery with fluorescent molecules such as ICG partially addresses this need but remains limited by the poor tumour specificity of the agents currently available. In this cross-disciplinary research project, our team is developing a novel highly fluorescent molecular imaging nanoformulation designed to specifically accumulate within brain tumour tissues.

You will primarily work within the Future Industries Institute’s bioengineering lab, which is fully equipped for the preparation of nanoformulation, including molecular imaging agents. You will also engage with the Sid Faithfull Brain Cancer Laboratory at the QIMR Berghofer in Queensland, where cutting-edge brain tumour models have been developed. You will also have valuable access to The South Australian Neurological Tumour Bank and their brain tumour patient tissues. You will be supported by a multidisciplinary team and industry partners with relevant expertise, providing you with a world-class research environment with excellent opportunities to progress successful outcomes to the clinical trialling phase.

Through the collaboration with Ferronova’s R&D team, you will also gain knowledge in the GMP manufacturing of pharmaceutical products. There is a shortage of these critical skills so you will be positioned for exciting career opportunities post-graduation.
