Project Description

(MPHIL - 2 Years) Purpose:
In 2015, Ireland adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; a 15-year global framework centred on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of these goals requires that, by 2030, all learners should acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development. To meet this goal, the Department of Education & Skills published ‘The National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development in Ireland 2014 – 2020’, which is currently being monitored for execution under ‘The SDG National Implementation Plan 2018-2020’. TU Dublin is Ireland’s first Technology University. Through a transformative learning process, it aims to develop graduates who are emotionally and sustainability literate, make contributions to local and global communities and have contemporary skills associated with employability. This is a full-time research project (MPhil, with possibility to progress to PhD), which aims to seed a state-of-the-art sustainability for education agenda within TU Dublin, encompassing a physical, institutional and virtual ecosystem that will enable a living-lab learning environment through collaborations among the academic colleges in the new multi-campus setting.

The project will involve:
- undertaking a critical review and synthesis of the literature on sustainability assessment, reporting and tracking tools in higher education;
- designing, through process of consultation, a state-of-the-art sustainability reporting tool for TU Dublin that can be used to evaluate and report on its sustainability for education performance.
- leveraging existing data gathering instruments to benchmark the embeddedness of sustainability in TU Dublin’s curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities against international best-practice;
- seeding a pipeline of living-lab projects to support sustainability learning both within discipline-specific programmes and as part of transformative learning events;
- integrating sustainability into the organisational structure and business model of TU Dublin, as an area of strategic importance in its transformation;
- acting in accordance with the objectives of the research project and conforming to highest standards of ethics possible;
- undertaking other duties as may be reasonably required from time-to-time.
