About the Project

A fully funded industry focussed 1 year M.Sc research project is offered aimed at preparing a range of organocatalytic oxidants and assessing their application in detergent formulations. The project is offered in collaboration with P&G and will require the student to spend time on-site at the company’s research unit (Newcastle).

Over recent years, there has been increasing interest among academic research groups in the field of organocatalytic oxidation. The predominant classes are based upon natural inspired structures meaning they are generally environmentally-benign, safe and sustainable. They can also make use of O2 or H2O2 as green terminal oxidants and can be carried out under mild conditions and in aqueous media, making them particularly attractive materials for application in detergent chemistry. The aim of the project is to prepare a range of potential organocatalyst structures and evaluate their chemical reactivity in standard detergent assays; as such the project will require a combination of synthetic organic chemistry and assay testing. This is a very good project for individuals interested in learning more about industrial chemistry and research.
