The analysis and design of complex systems requires not only the ability to understand the functionality of the system as a whole but also the ability to design and optimize components and subsystems that gives rise to the emergent properties. Modelling of systems underpins the ability to carry out analysis and design, and in the case of complex systems, the challenge is to develop multiscale models at the whole system, subsystems and components levels. The same parallel applies when the system under consideration is a natural system, such as agricultural plant production system, living system, such as human musculo-skeletal system, or an engineered system, such as the aircraft gas turbine engine.
TThe aims of a number of related projects are to develop multiscale modeling techniques based on the concepts of model reduction, spatiotemporal modeling and model integration. It will build on the group’s current activities in a number of applications within multi-disciplinary research teams involving the University Institutes and Centres such as the Grantham Centre for Sustainability, INSIGNEO and the RR-UTC.
The projects (for related projects, see my project listing under Complex Systems and Signal Processing) will require candidates to have excellent mathematical, analytical and computational skills. It will be an advantage if the candidates have familiarity with system dynamics, modelling and identification and systems engineering.
Applicants can apply for a Scholarship from the University of Sheffield but should note that competition for these Scholarships is highly competitive.
