Additive manufacturing is rapidly developing manufacturing concept; however, metal additive manufacturing has seen numerous inconsistencies regarding methods of controlling and standardizing the performance of the deposits from the metal additive manufacturing process. The technology is constrained by factors which include low productivity of the current equipment, the need for additional material, process stability, poor product quality, lack of training and education of users and finally the unavailability of standards and certification. Most manufacturers are cautious about using additive manufacturing as a viable manufacturing process due to the lack of repeatability and consistency of the manufactured parts. The primary challenge, however, is that materials produced using this technique contain numerous defects which limits the application of additive manufactured materials. In this project the student will explore the additive manufacturing of aluminium sheets through transient liquid phase diffusion bonding.
The ideal student would have a keen demonstrable interest or background in material science, chemistry, engineering, or a related field. A drive to conduct research, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and within a team.
The PhD candidate should also have excellent oral communication and academic writing skills in English. Experience in writing academic articles and/or conference papers is desirable.
Formal applications can be made via the University of Bradford web site; applicants should register an account and select 'Full-time PhD in Engineering' as the course.
